Be Still

"Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth" Psalm 46:10.

Being still does not come naturally to us. It is not intuitive. Our natural inclination is to do something in times of trouble. The psalmist reminds us in the first verse of Psalm 46, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." Troubles come in many forms, some small and others great. But the Lord will always provide a place of safety, strengthening, and assistance in the midst of the storm.

The storms of life come in many forms from broken relationships, health problems, to financial difficulties. But when we quiet our hearts, slow down our minds, and refrain from taking action, the Lord brings a stillness and calmness that is a work of His grace and peace. Somehow the problem becomes smaller and God's presence increases in our conscious awareness. His "ever-presentness" floods our soul and His strength takes over as our striving ceases.

Being still before the Lord is both a work of grace and a spiritual discipline. Resisting the impulse to do and choosing to wait on the Lord, be still, and allow Him to carry us through the storm seems foolish. But as Mark Twain once said, "If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you always got." Many times doing what we have done before, rather than being still, gets us what we have always got in the past. Be still, and know that His is God for you today!
