The 2001 - 2002 school year has been very successful! The School Board is encouraged as we plan for the future of WCCS. One goal of the Board is to communicate more effectively with those involved with the school. The Board Relations Committee has been formed to implement a plan for regular communication between the Board, faculty and parent body. To establish a basis for good communication, it is necessary for everyone to have an understanding of the role of a Board member as opposed to that of an Administrator, the responsibilities of the various Board committees, and how Board members are elected.
The areas of responsibility for Board members are as follows:
- Serve as spiritual leaders of the school, waiting upon God for His direction.
- Exercise oversight for the entire school through planning and evaluation.
- Establish sound policies for school operation.
- Supervise, encourage and evaluate the work of the Headmaster.
- Employ competent personnel whom they will hold accountable to carry out the policies of the school.
- Determine the best means of providing necessary resources.
- Establish the method for financing the operation of the school.
- Assist in interpreting the school's mission to its constituents and the local community.
- Do advance planning for the school's development.
- Direct the Administration to maintain a good working relationship with local Christian and public schools, the State Department of Education, accrediting associations, and Christian School associations.
- Act as a final authority on problems arising from within the school.
- Maintain proper and open lines of communication among school family without violating the Biblical principles found in Matthew 18.
- Have final responsibility in the hiring/dismissal of all permanent personnel.
Only the Board as a whole has the authority to govern. The Board does not enter into the day-to-day operation of the school. Board members have no authority to act unilaterally or to supervise staff unless granted that authority by the full Board.
The responsibilities of the Board's committees are as follows:
Executive Committee
The Executive Committee is comprised of the Board Officers (Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer), as elected by the full Board.
Personnel / Curriculum Committee
This committee has the ultimate authority in the hiring and firing process based on the recommendations of the Administration. The committee also oversees and reviews all curriculums, including academic and Biblical instruction in the classroom. Additional responsibilities include recommending to the Board for approval graduation requirements, course offerings, academic honors, rules for extracurricular activities, academic probation, attendance, and dress code.
Board Relations Committee
This committee develops and implements a plan for effective communication between the Board, faculty, and the parent body.
Development / School Relations Committee
This committee oversees all development and fund raising activities at the school. It is responsible for evaluating, reviewing and approving all fund raising activities. This includes management of cultivation, solicitation and proper stewardship of all donors on behalf of WCCS. Marketing, community involvement and public relations also fall under this committee's new responsibilities.
Buildings and Grounds / Finance Committee
This committee is responsible to recommend policies regarding the physical plant of the school. This includes facility usage and maintenance, facility changes, insurance, vehicles, the building and grounds budget, emergency drills and safety inspections. The committee is also responsible for overseeing all issues related to the financial aspects of the school.
Many people have asked, "How do you get on the Board?"
The nomination and election processes are described below.
Each March the Chair of the Board appoints a Nominating Committee composed of 3 members of the Board of Trustees, one of whom shall be an elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church. All Board members may nominate candidates to be considered by the committee based on the following attributes:
- Church Membership and Involvement
- Christian Testimony
- Philosophy of Christian Education
- Adherence to School Philosophy
- Commitment to Serve
- Skills in Areas that Compliment Board Needs
All candidates must be approved by the Elders of Westminster Presbyterian Church at their April meeting. The candidates will be voted on by the Board at its June meeting and called to begin service at the July meeting.
Throughout the year, the Board will use the school website, located at www.wccs.org, to relay updates on significant happenings and events. Please be sure to check in regularly. Your Board looks forward to serving you this year and asks for your prayers as we seek God's vision for WCCS in the years ahead.
