The Elementary School at Westminster Catawba Christian School seeks to provide a high-quality, developmentally appropriate program for children in partnership with their parents. Our goal is to provide students with a quality learning environment in which good study habits are formed and standards of Christian conduct are observed. Below is a description of the various aspects of the Elementary School program integrated to enhance the learning experience of each student:

  • Curriculum -- The Preschool program is designed to give children very positive feelings toward the school setting, exposing them to the important readiness skills that make for a successful experience in formalized instruction. Children in Kindergarten, while exposed to the sound/letter relationships and blending of letters into words, are not expected to be reading in order to move to first grade, even though most are. Students in Kindergarten are also exposed to number concepts. In addition, our students also receive instruction through devotions, music, physical education, and library time. In the Elementary School students study a core curriculum of reading, writing, composition, spelling, math, science, history, geography, and penmanship. All subjects are taught from a Biblical perspective ensuring that the school's philosophy of education is being implemented in the classroom. In addition to the core academic subjects, music, art, library skills, and physical education are taught to all students. Bible is also taught by a certified Bible teacher to children in Kindergarten once per week and to students in the elementary school three days per week to prepare them for their upper school studies in Bible. Bible instruction consists of the basic doctrines of the Christian faith. With the Biblical integration in all subjects, a wholistic approach to life and the Scriptures is manifested.
  • Chapel -- Separate chapel programs are held once per week for the Preschool and Elementary School. These are times of spiritual refreshment and encouragement through corporate singing and through the hearing of God's Word as shared by guest speakers or by one class of the Elementary School.
  • Discipline -- The Bible clearly indicates that parents are responsible for the discipline (e.g. training and instruction) of their children. The Christian school seeks to assist parents in their God-given responsibilities, therefore, Westminster Catawba Christian School seeks not to assume a task which God gives to parents, but only to serve as the parents' appointed and authorized representative in the child training process during the hours the child is in our care. In formulating a philosophy of education and discipline the school has attempted to align itself with the Bible's instructions to parents to discipline their children according to Scripture so as to reinforce and support at school the training given at home. God expects parents and other authorities to discipline children so as to produce persons who become consistently more self-disciplined, requiring less supervision as they mature. God's ultimate purpose in charging parents and authorities with this task is to prepare children to respond to Him in salvation and to live in harmony with His commandments and principles given in the Bible. Students are also responsible for their own discipline. During school hours, after school hours, and at school-related and school-supervised functions, students are to respond to school faculty and staff with the same obedience in action and respectfulness of spirit that should be present when they respond to their parents or guardians. Any failure to maintain a Biblical attitude of respect and obedience toward school authorities will result in disciplinary measures appropriate for the violation. The school expects parents' support in such disciplinary action. While operating under this philosophy of discipline the educational process can reach its fullest potential.
  • Enrichment Classes -- All students in the Elementary School at Westminster Catawba Christian School are given the opportunity to enrich their educational experience by participating in non-academic subjects as well as the traditional core classes. For Preschool students we offer music, library skills and physical education. For Kindergarten students we have enrichments in Bible, library skills, physical education and music. Students in the first and second grades are exposed to art classes as well as music, physical education, library skills, and Bible. The third through sixth grade students are allowed to participate in art, music, Bible, library skills, and physical education, as well as, computer classes and beginner band.
  • Extended Day Care -- Realizing that many of our school families are helped by a meaningful program of after school care for their children, the school board authorizes supervision of children between 11:30am and 6:00pm. Children are enrolled in Extended Day Care when they attend on a regular basis and the costs for such services are paid monthly along with regular tuition payments.
